When I did so, it became angsty, but when it’s Misfits, well—that’s to be expected. You don’t have to watch Misfits to read this. It’ll help if you know more about “the lightning” as it happened in the show, and if you’re familiar with some of the powers, but I think it’s enjoyable either way.

A/N: So today is Kurtbastian and Kids. For this story I considered it Kurtbastian as Kids and set them in an AU where they’re young for a good amount of time. Also, two other categories/days kind of found their way in here, but I think the gist of the story definitely fits the bill. Enjoy this, and happy Kurtbastian week! (:
Kurt signs up for Lima community college classes as soon as possible (*sob*). He plans on taking full units there for summer school and for the fall semester while he waits to apply to schools in New York for next year. (NYADA and MULTIPLE schools this time, so that he can have a back up plan to fall back on just in case the NYADA admissions people fall and hit their heads again, sending him a rejection letter instead of an acceptance letter).
Kurt is really, really, really sad during the first few weeks of summer, to say the least. He didn’t cry a lot at first but he was quiet, faintly smiling at breakfast and saying minimal words about anything and everything. It hurts Blaine to see Kurt like this. Blaine is mad that Kurt didn’t get to go, and more than once he’s called the NYADA offices to give them a (pointless) piece of his mind, only to reach the dial tone or a recording.
Blaine knows better than to force Kurt to talk about it all, about the fears and the shock and the lingering hopelessness. He knows that Kurt will do it, in time. Instead Blaine is there for every “stage” of the grief. He’s there when they’re watching re-runs of Cupcake Wars one day in Kurt’s room, and all of a sudden, Kurt starts to cry about how much this all sucks for the first time. Blaine holds him and kisses his temple, half-confused because two seconds ago Kurt had been smiling and appearing just fine, but half-understanding as well, because Blaine knows this must be hard for Kurt. He knows that New York and NYADA were Kurt’s everything.
The weeks go by like that, with Kurt and Blaine spending constant, quiet time together at Kurt’s place, fingers entangled and Blaine giving Kurt’s hand little encouraging squeezes, even when Kurt isn’t showing that he needs it. Sometimes they’ll be lying in Kurt’s bed joking lightly, and then Kurt will tear up and start cycling about how he wasn’t good enough, how he’ll never be good enough. Blaine stops him right there and kisses him, tells him that everything’s going to be alright and tells him that it’s not over.
“Your time’s gonna come,” Blaine says, holding Kurt’s face, staring at him with big, shaky eyes. “Everything changed, and I know it’s scary, but it all happened for a reason. Your time’s gonna come.”
Finn and Kurt are there for each other too, until Finn has to leave for the army. Blaine comes over almost every day to find Kurt and Finn in their pajamas at three p.m., eyes glued to the television and hands flicking furiously against the controllers of Finn’s Xbox. There are always empty, grease-stained pizza boxes and tissues and stuff all over the living room floor, and Blaine can tell that Finn and Kurt are, like, maybe kinda sorta depressed? but he just smiles weakly at them and watches them channel their emotions into Call of Duty (which Kurt doesn’t even know the first thing about, he just presses buttons and squeals whenever he gets shot at; and wow, Blaine thinks, isn’t playing COD kind of morbid considering the fact that Finn’s joining the army? if it is, he doesn’t say anything. he just stays quiet and he awkwardly chuckles and watches)
Rachel went to New York early (of course), and so did Santana (her mom gave her that money for New York and she decided to just go for it), but almost everyone else from the Glee club is still in Lima for the time being. Saying goodbye at school didn’t quite mean saying goodbye for good, just yet.
Mercedes isn’t set to leave for L.A. until early August, so she and Sam spend their days writing songs for Mercedes to sing when she finally gets her record deal, and laying out by the pool. Sam “officially” moves back to Kentucky for that summer but Mercedes stays for a week or two at his house sometimes, while he stays with her family in Lima sometimes too.
Puck’s still cleaning pools and making bank. Like Kurt, he’s signed up for two or three classes at the Lima community college, just to do it. It wasn’t really his idea, and Kurt and Finn and Quinn and everybody had talked him into it. Whatever. He doesn’t know how the hell he’s ever gonna graduate from college some day, when high school had been so hard. But everyone from Glee—they all believe in him. And all summer he thinks about how they all started to pull through for him in his most hopeless hours, when they stayed up all night studying for that god damn European geography test and in the end, he passed.
Artie goes on lunch dates with Quinn (who leaves for Yale in early August) some days, hangs out with Mercedes and Sam other days, and sees Tina, Mike, Puck, Kurt, Finn, and Blaine as much as he can. A lot of times they’re all at his house just wasting time together, dancing and going swimming and playing drinking games with Puck’s beer and vodka stash. Even when June turns into July, they don’t get tired of each other. Artie’s gonna miss them all, all the seniors, especially Quinn, Finn, and ‘Cedes since they’re leaving soonest. All the juniors will miss the seniors, but they all still have time together now, so they make the best of it in the moment.
Every once in a while Artie and Tina will hang out on their own, laughing nervously about how they’re the only two left of the original five. Tina will cry a little about how wonderful a year it was, and about how much she’s going to miss Mike, and Artie promises her that the two of them will make it a wonderful year again this year too, no matter what. Tina smiles, and even though she’s been with Mike for two years, she still hasn’t forgotten how much she cares about Artie. She’s his best friend, still, and he’s hers. She’s glad that at least she’ll still see him every day, just like she has since day one of their freshman year, and when Artie tells her to “start thinkin’ about our Nationals-winning duets, girl,” she laughs at him, grabs his hand, and squeezes it. “Okay.”
Blaine’s waiting outside of Kurt’s first Lima community college class with flowers he picked from random spots on campus. Kurt talks about how weird it is to be in there, and about how he doesn’t see how taking Plant Biology is going to ever transfer to a career in theater or fashion design, and Blaine just smiles at him. Kurt starts to feel a little better and better each day; he’s still sad of course, but he’s so, so grateful that Blaine loves him and is always there, grateful that Burt and Carole and Finn understand and it’s like the world hasn’t turned quite as upside down as he thought.
The day Finn is set to leave for his army posts brings back Kurt’s miserable crying, though. At the airport, everyone cries. Finn and Kurt probably hug for ten minutes sraight, and Finn squeezes Kurt’s back beneath his arms so hard that Kurt might feel bruises tomorrow, but he doesn’t care. Finn didn’t wanna cry, but his tears are already soaking wet spots into Kurt’s blue jacket, and Kurt is red-faced and telling him to “please stay safe” and “remember that I’ll always, always love you” in a shaky voice. Burt and Carole part with Finn too, with tearful exchanges, and for a half second, Finn’s stomach sinks and he regrets everything; regrets enlisting and sending Rachel off to New York, regrets forcing himself to leave her because he didn’t want to hold her back. But he swallows, and he can’t turn back now. He’s gotta be a man. He gives his family another look, stands tall, smiles sadly, and then walks towards the warm terminal.
In August, everyone begins to slowly go their own way, but it’s been a really, really fun summer for them all, even if it was bittersweet. Mercedes flies to L.A., Quinn goes to Yale, Mike goes to Chicago, and they’re all there for each other’s train departures, just like they had been for Rachel’s.
Kurt’s (and Puck’s) fall semester at Lima CC starts in mid August, a week before Blaine and the juniors-now-seniors start at McKinley again. As Kurt’s getting ready for his first morning of class, Blaine is waking up as the sunlight in the window peeks into his eyes, and Kurt is smiling at him and thinking about forever.
“You look nice,” Blaine says sheepishly, eyeing Kurt’s outfit.
Kurt looks at himself in the mirror. Wants to judge everything he sees for a moment, pick out a flyaway hair or a small, pale blemish or a wrinkle in his vest, but he takes a deep breath and pushes the doubts all away.
“Thank you,” Kurt says. He goes and sits on the edge of his bed, letting Blaine lean up and kiss him on the cheek.
Blaine looks into Kurt’s eyes and Kurt’s looks into Blaine and they have one of those moment where they wonder where the summer had gone. Kurt wonders where high school had gone, where study dates at the Lima Bean and holding Blaine’s hand in the hallways at Dalton and sitting in the choir room next to his boyfriend had all so suddenly vanished to. It makes him sad and he feels his eyes beginning to sting again, and Blaine squeezes both of his hands.
“Are you crying?” Blaine asks.
Kurt shakes his head, blinks rapidly. “No, no,” he dismisses, smiling weakly. “I’ll be fine.”
Blaine knows he will be.
“Can’t believe—school already starts for me next week,” Blaine says. “It’s going to be weird going there without you.” He swings Kurt’s hands back and forth. “Wanna come back to school with me on my first day?” he asks, smiling.
Kurt snorts out a laugh and it makes Blaine’s heart happy.
“Nooo thank you,” Kurt chuckles. He runs his thumb over Blaine’s knuckles. “You’re gonna do great. And—I’m moving on. In a different direction than the way I pictured it, but…” He kisses Blaine’s hand. “We’re going to be alright.”
Blaine tells him, “I love you,” Kurt says, “I love you too,” and feeling a little nostalgic, Blaine adds, ”I’ll still get to see you after school and on weekends,” and Kurt just laughs and smiles at him again.
Kurt can’t see as far ahead into the future as he’d always planned to, and the Glee club as he once new it has dispersed, with it’s former stars going out there and trying to reach their dreams…
But Kurt’s just going to try and smile through it all, and do what Finn said: “Let the universe do it’s thing.”
